What to expect

How professional teeth whitening works

We take impressions of your upper and lower teeth and have custom trays made specifically for your mouth. You fill the trays with our professional-grade whitening gel and wear them for the prescribed time, usually a couple of hours a day, or overnight if you prefer. Over two to three weeks, the active ingredient gently breaks down the staining compounds inside the enamel, leaving teeth noticeably brighter.

Why professional whitening is better than shop-bought options

Over-the-counter whitening products sold in the UK are legally limited to 0.1% hydrogen peroxide, barely enough to make a visible difference. Professional whitening gel prescribed by a dentist contains significantly higher concentrations, used safely because we have assessed your teeth and gums beforehand. The custom trays also hold the gel exactly where it needs to be, reducing gum irritation and giving more even results.

Who is suitable for teeth whitening?

Most adults with healthy teeth and gums are good candidates. Whitening works best on natural tooth enamel, so it will not change the colour of crowns, veneers, or composite restorations. If you have these in visible areas, we will advise you on the most realistic outcome. Patients with significant decay or gum disease will need those issues addressed before whitening begins.

Managing sensitivity

Some patients experience temporary sensitivity during whitening, usually a mild aching or twinging sensation in response to cold. This is normal and resolves within a day or two of finishing treatment. We include desensitising gel with your whitening kit, and you can use sensitivity toothpaste in the weeks leading up to treatment to reduce the chances of it occurring.
